Dasara: time to unite with families for Bengalis

It is time to invite Goddess Durga to descend on earth

On Mahalaya Amavasya, it is believed that Durga Devi descends on earth along with her children.

The goddess, who eliminates evil spirits to bring prosperity to life, conquers the malevolence (Mahishasur — the asura) and destroys him on the 10th day (Vijayadasami).

For Bengalis, it is time to bond with family and friends as Dasara begins with ‘Devipaksha’ on Mahalaya Amavasya.

The nine-day festivities commence with ‘Durga Devi Bodhon’ where some of the traditional families place ‘kalash’ filled with fruits, mango leaves, coconut and the likes in the puja room.

For some it also signifies purity and auspiciousness to invite Goddess Durga to descend on earth.

Though the actual festivities commence from shasti (thidhi) and go on till dasami, Bengalis in the city say that it is the most important festival that they observe involving men and children offering ‘aarti’ and swaying to the beats of ‘dhak’, popularly referred to as ‘dhunichi-naach’.

Visiting the hometown, spending time with family members, offering pushpanjali to the goddess, exchanging sweets and participating in a host of cultural programmes are some of the events lined up during Dasara. Kabita Giri, a Bengali, said: “Of all, sandhi puja with 108 diyas and 108 lotus flowers is considered to be very important.

The puja is performed between the end of ashtami and the dawn of navami where Goddess Shakti (Durga) will be at the peak of her powers to kill Mahishasur.

Once her mission of destroying the evil is accomplished, Durga Devi returns to kailash.

Kola-Bou

Sanjukta Dutta explained: “On Saptami, the idol of Durga Devi, flanked by Karthikeya and Saraswathi on one side and Ganesh and Kola Bou on the other, will be worshipped.

A banana tree, decorated with a white and red border sari, considered as Lord Ganesh’s wife is worshipped. After nine days of puja, the idols are later immersed in sea.”

“Dishes like khichudi with ‘tarkari’, ‘payesh’ and ‘luchi and chola-dal’ are generally offered as bhog and the community gathers at one of the Kalibaris or pandals and participate in the cultural programmes,” concluded another Bengali Tanya Narayan.
