On the eve of Republic Day, Collector S. Arokia Raj reminded people of the need to maintain the honour of the national flag.
In a press release on Saturday, the Collector said that as per provisions of the Flag Code of India 2002 and the Prevention of Insults to National Honour Act of 1971, efforts must be made to make the people use flags made only of paper during important national festivals, cultural programmes and sports meets. Paper flags can be waved during such meetings but after being used they should not be dropped on the floor or dumped at any place but kept in a proper place. Leaving the flags where they were after an event would result in them getting damaged due to weather or other reasons and this was showing disrespect to the national flag. The national flag cannot be used as festoon, a round badge or as any other ornamental object.
The Act says that the expression, “Indian National Flag” includes any picture, painting, drawing or photograph, or other visible representation of the Indian national flag, or of any part or parts thereof, made of any substance or represented on any substance. And violation of the act warrants imprisonment up to three years or fine or both.
