The three-day Kakinada Beach Festival was opened on a grand scale at Vakalapudi on Saturday. The East Godavari district administration has been conducting the festival for the second consecutive year with an objective of promoting tourist attractions in the district.
Union Minister M.M. Pallam Raju, Minister for Tourism Vatti Vasanth Kumar, district in-charge Minister N. Raghuveera Reddy and Minister for Stamps and Registrations Tota Narasimham were among the dignitaries who participated in the grand gala opening ceremony.
As a prelude to the festival, a 5-km run was conducted by the district officials from the District Sports Authority Stadium to Bhanu Gudi Junction, in which Collector Neetu Prasad, Superintendent of Police N. Sivasankar Reddy, Commandant of the APSP Rajesh Kumar and other officials participated.
Speaking at the inaugural function, Mr. Pallam Raju congratulated the district administration for taking up the initiative to conduct the three-day festival.
He said that though there were many tourist attractions in the district, most of them were not in the limelight due to absence of publicity. He felt such festivals would help in promoting the tourist spots.
Cultural performances by the local artistes and renowned artistes were arranged at the Beach on all the three days.
Stalls of handicrafts, handlooms and traditional food items remained the major attraction at the festival. The police made elaborate security arrangements and promulgated traffic diversions keeping in view of the huge response to the last year’s festival.

The East Godavari district administration is looking for event managers who can organise cultural programmes on the sidelines of the three-day Beach Festival to be held at Vakalapudi Beach from January 11. The event managers will have to arrange sound and lighting system and coordinate with the artistes who were participating in the event. Further details can be had from the Additional Joint Collector. The district administration is also inviting logos and designs for mementoes to be distributed to the participants and sponsors of the beach festival. Prizes will be presented to the best designs and the last date for sending the entries to the Assistant Tourism Officer in the Collectorate (phone: 94408-16073) on or before December 31.
Reviewing the arrangements here on Saturday, Collector Neetu Prasad said that plans were afoot to invite noted artistes like drummer Sivamani to the event and due preference would be given to the local artistes and the students of different educational institutions. She exuded confidence that the festival would reflect the cultural heritage of the district.

East Godavari district administration is making arrangements for the celebration of three-day ‘beach festival’ at Vakalapudi beach for the second consecutive year from January 10.
Addressing a review meeting with the officials of various departments here on Wednesday, Collector Neetu Prasad said that the State government allocated Rs.12 lakh for the last festival, while the sponsors had come out with another Rs. 40 lakh. She said that efforts were on to get more funds from the government for this year event as the first round of beach festival was a grand success.
Recalling the traffic congestion on the Beach Road during the last festival, the Collector asked the police to identify alternative routes to avoid traffic jams.
Different committees were appointed to ensure peaceful conduct of the festival and the convener of each committee was directly answerable to the Collector. Similarly, a sponsors’ meet would be conducted in which the hoteliers and tour operators would be invited. Ms. Neetu asked the officials to arrange a photo exhibition that would depict the places of importance in the district.
She also suggested arrangement of stalls in the exhibition by the government departments.
Cultural performances would be arranged on all the three days for providing entertainment to the audience, she said.
