The S.P. Sampathy memorial 43 rd senior National and inter-State carrom championships were off to an impressive start at the Swarna Bharati Indoor Stadium here on Sunday morning.
Nearly 700 players from a number of States and institutions are participating in the meet, being held for the second time by the Carrom Association of Visakhapatnam District after a gap of five years.
MLA M. Vijaya Prasad inaugurated the championships and took salute at a march past of the participating teams. General secretary of All India Carrom Federation Prabhjeet Baccher, vice-president M. Chandramouli, president of VDBA T.S.R. Prasad, Director of Sports of GVMC Y. Srinivasa Rao, general secretary of Andhra Carrom Association and chairman of the organising committee Neeraj Kumar Sampathy, secretary Udaya Kumar, treasurer P. Raveendran and others participated. Dr. Sampathy gave a report on the championships in which 26 men and 24 women teams are participating in the inter-State championships and 20 in the inter-institutions competition. The team events would end on March 11 and the individual events on March 14.
Seven-time National champion and Arjuna award winner Maria Irudayam and Andhra No. 1 ranked player Elahi took oath on behalf of the players.
Children from the Siva Sivani School and Sai Kala Samithi presented a cultural programme.
Later the competitions commenced at the KPR Convention Centre on the VIP road.
