Here’s some good news for Vijayawada’s budding shuttlers who wish to train under international players with expertise and experience.
Keen to promote badminton, Fun Times Club at Teachers Colony, has roped in former India doubles player J.B.S Vidyadhar to train kids.
Speaking to mediapersons on Wednesday, organising secretary V. Sambasiva Rao said decision to appoint Vidhadhar will be a boon to children residing at Bank Colony, RTC Colony and Vasavi Colony as they can train scientifically on the two wooden courts.
J.B.S. Vidyadhar is a product of Vijayawada SAI Centre and along with Chetan Anand, he brought many laurels to the country.
“The club is conducting a one-day AP State inter-club badminton team championship for teams from Krishna, Guntur, Prakasam and West Godavari on March 8. Competitions will be held in five events – men’s singles, women singles, veteran, mixed and men’s doubles,” he added.
“One player cannot play in more than two events, and a team which wins three matches will move to the next round. The tournament will be held in best of three games with 15 rally points without extension,” Mr. Rao pointed out.
Mr. Rao said the club was promoting chess, volleyball, table tennis and yoga among its members. Andhra Pradesh Badminton Association secretary K.Ch. Punnaiah Chowdhary said the association was simultaneously conducting zonal club badminton team event at Hyderabad, Kodada (Nalgonda), Nellore and Kakinada on March 8 and 9.
“Hyderabad and Vijayawada are hosting on March 8 and Kakinada, Kodada and Nellore on March 9. This is the first time such a tournament is being held in Andhra Pradesh, as a step to promote the game among players from rural area. International players and national medallists are not eligible to participate,” he added.
