Well-known researcher and former professor of nuclear physics of Andhra University and Principal of its College of Science and Technology Velpuri Lakshminarayana passed away here on Saturday. He was 83 and is survived by his wife, two sons and two daughters.
Prof. Lakshminarayana was one of the pioneers of nuclear research at AU as well as the university system in India, along with founder HoD Swami Gnanananda.
He was the first PhD in nuclear physics from the university.
He worked on nuclear spectroscopy and in-beam nuclear spectroscopy and related areas, published more than 200 papers in international journals, was a visiting faculty of foreign universities and was associated with several international laboratories and was instrumental in AU building close cooperation with BARC. He was a member of several national academic committees constituted by the DST and UGC.
He was recipient of the first Best Teacher award instituted by the State Government, along with Prof. K. Satchidananda Murty and Prof. B.S. Murty from Andhra University way back in the 70s.
Vice-Chancellor G.S.N. Raju, Rector E.A. Narayana and others condoled the death of Prof. Lakshminarayana.
