Gunjala Gondi Lipi Learning and Research Centre to come up in Gunjala village
Adilabad Collector Babu A. on Monday said that the administration will celebrate January 27 every year as Gunjala Gondi Lipi Day. He also announced sanction of a building worth Rs. 15 lakh to house the Gunjala Gondi Lipi Learning and Research Centre in this village.
Releasing a Telugu reader for Gondi language for Class I, the Collector said the book will be included as part of the curriculum in tribal schools from coming month. The developments were announced keeping in view the importance of protecting Gondi language and culture for the overall developments of Adivasis in the district.
The Project Officer at Utnoor’s Integrated tribal Development Agency (ITDA) also underscored the need to protect the culture and heritage of tribal people.
Professor Jayadheer Tirumal Rao of the Centre for Dalit and Adivasi Studies and Translation, University of Hyderabad, explained the importance of the find of the archaic Gondi script in Gunjala village. The officials also performed bhumi puja for the building of the Gondi Centre besides felicitating the four elders who are the last among those who could decipher the script. Mesram Manohar, Kanaka Manik Rao and Gopagani Ravinder, the teachers who are associated with the rediscovery of Gondi script, were also present.
