Students steal the show with Malkhamb display

Collector spells out achievements of the administration

Awe inspiring performance by 25 boys on the traditional Malkhamb stole the show at the official Republic Day programme here on Sunday.

The students of Vommavaram Zilla Parishad High School in S Rayavaram mandal displayed some incredible callisthenic.

They shimmied up a wooden pole wrapping their agile bodies to show some incredible acts of balancing. In one of the performances a boy held on to the pole by positioning its rounded head in his armpit.

In another feat, one of the boys stood on one leg atop the rounded head of the pole and held aloft the National Tricolour.

Another boy tied his ankle to the top of the pole and stood parallel to the ground to top it he did fire-throwing.

The contingent of students, trained by Physical Education Teacher P Madhav Rao, received enthusiastic applause from the gathering of officers, police personnel, students from other schools and colleges, among others. R Satyanarayana headmaster of the ZP High School was on the field encouraging the students.

A number of other schools, including Mahatma Gandhi Municipal School, Daba Gardens, participated in the cultural performances.

The official Republic Day Celebrations at the Police Stadium here on Sunday saw district Collector A. Solomon Arokia Raj unfurl the National Flag and take the salute of the contingents. Police Commissioner B Sivadhar Reddy was on the stage with the district Collector.

The march past saw had contingents from the police, NCC and sea cadets and volunteers of the National Green Corps and a couple of schools. The march past was followed by tableau of different departments, including the traffic police who underscored the importance of road safety.

The Collector spelt out the achievements of the administration in the district and listed out department-wise performance in numbers.

He later gave away Republic Day awards to employees of different departments for their exemplary performance in the course of duty.

All the senior officers of the district and the city were present.

‘Work transparently’

VUDA Vice-Chairman N. Yuvaraj has asked officers and staff towork in a transparent manner.

Addressing the staff after hoisting the National Flag on the Republic Day, he asked them to adopt action plans to complete projects and works in time. About 25 officers and staff were given away merit certificates by the Vice-Chairman .

Certificates given

DIG, Visakhapatnam Range, P. Umapathi, hoisted the national flag at the District Armed Reserve Grounds, Kailasagiri, and gave away prizes to winners and runners-up of the SP’s cricket tournament and certificates to 75 police personnel for their services.

SP Vikram Jeet Duggal, Additional SP (Administration) D.N. Kishore, SDPO, Chintapalle, E.G. Ashok Kumar, and District Armed Reserve DSP S.V.N. Prasad participated.

At KGH, Superintendent M. Madhusudhana Babu hoisted the flag. Professor and Head of the Department of Gynaecology K. Saradabai, K.S.L.G Sastry, and B. Bangaraiah were among those present.

At JR Nagar near Venkojipalem, students of classes 4 and 5 adopted 20 saplings on Road No. 2.

Noted wrier Dwibhashyam Rajeswara Rao unfurled the national flag. Association president K.S.R. Murthy was in the chair
