Seventeen youngsters on a cycle expedition from Chennai to Kodaikanal on a fund-raising programme for construction of school buildings arrived here on Monday. The expedition left for Karaikudi on Tuesday. It has so far covered 310 kilometres: 130 km from Chennai to Puducherry and 180 km from Puducherry to Thanjavur. Karun Chandok, Formula One race driver, the leader of the team, said the idea is to cover 500 km from Chennai to Kodaikanal.
The charity ride is jointly organised by Madras Mid-Town Round Table 42 and the foundation run by Karun Chandok. “I have been promoting cycling as a form of exercise and social activity,” Mr. Chandok said.
For Siddharth Mohapatra, a member of the group, the cycle ride on the East Coast Road from Chennai to Puducherry was enjoyable. “But, the ride from Puduchery to Thanjavur had its challenges as roads were not good,” Mr. Mohapatra said.
Mahesh Ramamurthy, chairman of Madras Mid-Town Round Table 42, said donations collected from people would be spent towards construction of classrooms for government schools in Chennai. Mr. Chandok said so far Rs. 10 lakh has been collected.
